what is newborn circumcision

Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the skin covering the end of the penis is removed. The procedure is performed by a Doctor in the first few days of life, up to 14 days old in the hospital or in a Doctor’s office.

Although there are personal or religious reasons, some possible medical benefits are as follows:

  • Lower chance of urinary tract infections

  • Lower risk of cancer of the penis

  • Lower risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV (the AIDS virus)

  • Prevention of foreskin infections

  • Prevention of Phimosis, a condition where it is impossible to retract the foreskin

Risks:

  • Bleeding, infection, cutting the foreskin too short or too long

  • Improper healing

  • Decrease in sensation in the tip of the penis later in life
